Japan: All the Random, Unique Things!
Japan was filled with so many little quirks and fun things, that I had to document it somehow!
Bullet trains
Ok, so not really that quirky, but oh so cool and efficient! Clean, large, and so easy to get around on. Really wish the US would get on board with train travel.
Heated toilet seats
And all the buttons and functions to go along with it. The functions aren't as weird as you might think, either! Public toilets, hotels, pretty much everywhere had heated seats. Even our fairly rustic cabin in the mountains had a heated toilet!
Bubble tea
Because when in Japan, right? Matcha was my favorite kind I tried.
Vending machines
So many vending machines. Selling everything imaginable, but the drink ones were the most numerous. Literally in a 3 block walk, we counted closed to 30! And yet, somehow we took no pictures of them!!
No trash cans
Yet, it's so clean! Apparently Japan did away with trash cans after a terrorist scare, and the Japanese have just learned to carry a bag with them with for the trash. It works well once you get used to it.
7-11, Lawson's, Family Mart
Yep, 7-11 is never somewhere you'd eat in the US, but these stores are a whole new level in Japan. The best coffee we found (and at a cheap price), and Family Mart even offered fancy mix-ins after the machine created your drink of choice. So many delicious, fresh sushi and Japanese options, both warm and hot. Cashiers offer to heat things up for you in the microwave, provide utensils, and a lot of stores even had a sitting/restaurant area.
